Greycliffe will need to produce something special at Sandown on Saturday to keep his Gr.1 Queensland Derby (2200m) hopes alive.

The New Zealand-bred son of Tavistock was runner-up in the Listed Port Adelaide Guineas (1800m) two runs back before he was seventh in the Gr.3 Chairman’s Stakes (2035m) after making the pace each time.

Trainer Matt Cumani will instruct rider Ben Melham to change tactics on Saturday.

“If he's out the back, we can see if he's finishing his race off and if he can show that he's a genuine stayer, like we thought he was, then we can step back up to 2200 and 2400 metres,” he said.

Greycliffe will be opposed at Sandown by the in-form New Zealand-bred pair of Lucky For All and Mazzuro.
