A rise in weight wasn’t enough to stop the Wanganui jumper Zed Em from retaining his Von Doussa Steeplechase (3250m) title.
As he did last year, trainer Kevin Myers sent the son of Zed to Victorian horseman Patrick Payne to prepare for the Warrnambool feature. Twelve months ago, he carried 66kg to victory and produced a repeat performance on Saturday under 69kg in the hands of Steve Pateman.
Payne said he was unsure if Zed Em would run in the Great Eastern Steeplechase (4950m), which this year will be run on Easter Saturday instead of Easter Monday.
“Zed Em’s probably better in a race like the Brierly, but we’ll be open-minded about the Great Eastern,” he said.
