Nigel Blackiston is happy to take on more mature horses with Homados in Saturday's Patrobas Handicap (2000m) at Flemington.

Blackiston bought Homados for clients of his stable after the gelding's debut fourth in New Zealand when trained by Johno Benner and Hollie Wynyard as Axelrod.

The son of Zed steps out to 2000m for the first time in Saturday's A$120,000 race and Blackiston said the trip is a stepping stone to longer races for the three-year-old but the staying prospect is showing the right signs.

"I'm hoping he is going to make a St Leger horse," Blackiston said.

"He's shown nice promise at his first start and that's why we bought him."

"The 2000m will be lovely for him."

Blackiston is keen to test Homados in city grade before he gives him a break to prepare the horse for the VRC St Leger at Flemington on April 25.
