Waikouaiti’s annual New Year’s Day meeting was over before it had barely begun.
The opening event was won by the Michael and Matthew Pitman-trained Pipiana and that was the end of the action. A subsequent track inspection was made and the decision was announced to abandon the fixture.
“Clearly quite a few horses slipped on the turn, there was evidence of half a dozen slip marks,” stipendiary steward Mark Davidson said.
“They had about seven mils of rain yesterday, but I walked the track this morning with some of the jockeys and everyone thought it would be perfect.
