Scott Base took a successful step toward a Group One goal when he shed his maiden tag at Waipukurau.
The highly-regarded three-year-old, who was a stakes placegetter last season, showed his class late in the piece on Thursday when he cleared a pocket to lengthen stride and claim the Congratulations Upper Cut 1400m.
“He needed to win today and he’s got a big future,” said Johno Benner, who trains the Dalghar gelding with Hollie Wynyard.
“He needs good ground so we might look at the Zacinto Stakes two weeks before the 2000 Guineas for him.”
