Former top jockey Chad Ormsby is enjoying a number of roles within the industry since departing from a full-time training position.
He rode just shy of 300 winners before increasing weight forced his retirement and in the 2011-12 season he joined Michael Moroney in partnership at Ballymore Stables in Matamata.
In five seasons together, they sent out 115 winners before Ormsby went his own way last year to explore other options.
“I’ve been breaking in horses for a number of good stables, I enjoy educating the younger ones,” he said.
“I’ve got 13 going to the Ready to Run Sale, Riverrock Farm is our business, so I’m pretty busy – too busy. I’ve also got five racehorses in work and all the others are pre-trainers.”
One horse in his small racing team is Sansa Stark, who will be chasing a first solo training success for Ormsby when she runs in Wednesday’s NZB Insurance Pearl Series Race (1200m) at Te Rapa.
The Iffraaj four-year-old finished runner-up on debut at Te Aroha earlier this month.
“She didn’t surprise me, but we knew she was a run short,” he said. “She’s improved and she’s drawn wide, but she has got gate speed.
