Racing manners will be the key for Veuve Clicquot when she lines up in the NZB Insurance Pearl Series at Otaki on Friday.

The Rock 'N' Pop two-year-old has really impressed her trainer Tony Bambry, who purchased her out of Mapperley Stud's draft at the 2016 NZB Select sale for $12,000.

"I'd seen her on a parade around the studs in January in the Waikato," he said.

"I spotted her there and thought she was the nicest filly I'd seen the whole time I was looking at the 500-600 horses. I couldn't believe I got her for the money I paid.

"She's got a wonderful physique, a big strong filly with a lot of natural muscle on her."

A lack of trial and jump out opportunities in the Central Districts showed in her first start at Trentham on June 10 when she raced greenly to finish third.

"I raced two that day that should have been going to the trials, but there has just been nothing for them," Bambry said.

"I know she has heaps of ability, but she just hasn't had any practice.

"We had three lots (of trials) at Foxton all abandoned in a row. We haven't been able to have jump outs. It makes it really hard trying to get these two-year-olds ready for the races without having some experience."

Despite Veuve Clicquot's lack of experience, Bambry rates the two-year-old filly's chances in Friday's 1200m race.

"I rate her chances. It's quite a good field with trial winners and Graeme Rogerson is bringing one down from the north," he said.

"The blinkers are going on tomorrow just to get her focused. If she runs straight I think she is a really good chance."

Bambry believes Veuve Clicquot could potentially be a classic contender next season.

"If she could perform well we'd look at toward heading to Christchurch in November. She's that sort of filly, she's going to get over ground." – NZ Racing Desk
