New Zealand horseman Chris Waller has come a long way since his first Australian winner in a Wyong maiden nearly two decades ago.

The now champion trainer's breakthrough success was courtesy of Party Belle, who was ridden by a visiting Kiwi apprentice Opie Bosson.

The pair will again combine at Eagle Farm on Saturday, but the stakes are at the other end of the scale with Counterattack, who makes his final appearance in the Gr.1 Darley Kingsford-Smith Cup before retirement to stud.

Bosson rode the son of Redoute's Choice into a last-start second in the Gr.1 Doomben 10,000.

"I got on Counterattack just by chance last time and lucky enough I got to keep the ride," he said. "He went really well and the little bit of extra distance will suit him. I like the way he closed last start."
