Kelvin Tyler knows what it takes to win a Winter Cup and he has an eye on further success in Riccarton's Group Three feature in early August.

The Riverton trainer won the race in 2015 with Timy Tyler, who is currently spelling, and he has hopes of a repeat performance in this year's edition with Flying Sardine.

"I'd like to have a crack at it with her, she's really on fire at the moment," Tyler said.

Flying Sardine has three wins and a placing from her last five starts and she looks well-placed to add to her record in the Wingatui Function Centre Handicap at Friday's Otago meeting. She will again be ridden by apprentice Ruzaili Yatim.

"He gets on really well with her and she'll have this one and then I'll give her a little break," Tyler said.

A daughter of Flying Spur, Flying Sardine was bred by Bernie Myers, whose brother Kevin offered the mare to Tyler.

"She had a couple of jump-outs for Kevin and he thought she was better-suited down here," he said.

Tyler will also be represented at Wingatui by The Energizer and Fantamo.

"The Energizer should be a good chance, he's well and he will go hurdling at his next start," he said.

"Fantamo tries hard, but to be fair she would appreciate a better track so this will be her last one." – NZ Racing Desk.
