An outside gate on Wednesday wasn't enough to prevent a winning return at Ruakaka from Bombard.
The Dalghar gelding showed speed to cross the field and he held a strong gallop in the straight to beat Malambo and Lisdoonvarna, who was three lengths last with 600 metres to run.
"He's still a bit green and with plenty more to learn," rider Sam Spratt said. "He was unlucky at his last start when he got chopped out, otherwise he would have been in the Karaka Million."
Bombard was subsequently put aside after he finished sixth at Ellerslie in January.
