Former successful jockey John (J.T.) Anderson has died in Hawke's Bay. He was 84.

Born in Blackball on the West Coast to a coal mining family, Anderson left home at 14 to pursue a racing career in the North Island. After a decade in Matamata and Hamilton, he moved to Hastings to work for owner-trainer Keith Couper.

Anderson rode three consecutive Ormond Gold Cup winners on the Jack Leith-owned Jack's Corner and on February 16, 1963, he enjoyed a royal meeting with the Queen after winning the QEII Handicap on Moy.

His 400 winners featured two in the Hawke's Bay Gold Cup before he retired in 1976 at the age of 44.

Anderson continued his involvement with the thoroughbred industry as an assistant starter at Ellerslie until 2010.

A celebration of his life will be held in the Lambert Fountain Memorial Chapel, Elliot Street, Papakura, on Monday, May 1 at 11.00 am.
