Black type opportunities beckon Ladies First, who has enjoyed a smooth ride through the grades in quick time.
The daughter of Dylan Thomas has won four of her seven starts from Allan Sharrock's stable and he's eyeing next month's Listed James Bull Rangitikei Gold Cup at Awapuni for the four-year-old.
"We all know the further into the winter the more advantageous for her and the longer-term aim is the Wanganui Cup," Sharrock said.
The Listed middle distance event is a local feature for co-owner Humphrey O'Leary, who parted with $8000 to purchase Ladies First at Karaka in 2014.
"Her strike rate is very good and she's a black type mare, for sure," Sharrock said.
Ladies First's most recent appearance resulted in a runaway win over 1800 metres at New Plymouth.
"I think she'll probably be an even better mare at five and six so what we've seen is the tip of the iceberg," Sharrock said.
Sharrock is not short on talent in the ranks of older mares with Gypsy Fair and Art Deco to resume at Awapuni on Tuesday in the Power Farming Handicap.
The former hasn't raced since she won the Gr.3 Merial Metric Mile on the course in September, but she is a recent trial winner while Art Deco is first-up after consecutive wins in the spring and has also had a trial outing.
Another smart type close to a return to action is Whispering, who finished runner-up to Gypsy Fair in their 1000 metre open heat at Waverley last week. – NZ Racing Desk.
