Sampson has two black type staying features on his immediate programme.
Successful in the Gr.3 Trentham Stakes three runs back, he has enjoyed a brief let-up since he finished out of the money in the Gr.2 Avondale Cup.
"We kept him at the stables and gave him a couple of weeks off," trainer Howie Mathews said.
"I'll probably give him a run in the Awapuni Gold Cup and if all's well we'll run in the Hawke's Bay Cup."
