Co-trainer Graeme Rogerson believes a recent trip away for racing on the east coast circuit around Gisborne and Wairoa has been the making of Saturday's impressive Hawera maiden winner Make Me Achiever.
The leggy four-year-old notched his first success at just his sixth attempt when he out-muscled his rivals over 1400 metres on the weekend. The win came off the back of a tidy run for second at Wairoa with Rogerson certain the Makfi gelding is now ready to make his way through the grades.
"He went really well on the east coast without winning one," he said.
"That trip did him the world of good as he's been a different horse since he got home. He's still very green and showed a bit of that on Saturday but he's learning all the time and I think he's ready to step up to the better grades now.
"He's out of the good mare Bella Renza that I trained so he has the breeding on his side. Once he gets over more ground I think he could be a very good horse."
Bella Renza won seven races for Rogerson including the Listed Westbury Classic (1400m) while she also finished fourth in the Gr. 1 Waikato Draught Sprint (1400m) behind dual New Zealand Horse of the Year, Mufhasa.
Meanwhile Rogerson and wife Debbie are looking forward to Saturday's Gr. 1 Wellfield New Zealand Oaks (2400m) where they will line-up three-year-old filly Date Night as one of the favourites for the event.
"Date Night has come through her run at Ellerslie last week in great style and she's ready to run a bold race in the Oaks," he noted.
"She didn't have a lot of luck at Ellerslie where it was really a sit sprint affair and she had to make her run from well back. She's been competitive against the fillies all the way through and we think she can go another bold race on Saturday."
Rogerson also indicated a decision on the immediate programme of Gr. 3 Mongolian Khan Trophy winner Ferrando would be made in the next few days.
"I've been having a think about what's best for him and we'll probably make a decision early in the week," he said.
"I'm quite keen to take him to the Wellington Guineas at Trentham this Saturday and then over to Australia after that.
"We have been thinking about the TJ Smith at Randwick but that might be a little too soon for him. There's another nice race, the Arrowfield Stakes, on the 8th of April plus one in Adelaide in May that might also suit him better.
"I think he is definitely a Group One horse, it's just a matter of time until he gets there." – NZ Racing Desk
