Steppenwolf continues to frustrate his Hastings trainer John Bary.
The son of Stravinsky was expected to show his quality last time out on his home track, only to disappoint after having every chance in Opie Bosson's hands.
"I was confident he would win, but Opie felt he didn't stay the mile so we'll drop him back to 1400 at Otaki on Friday," Bary said.
Steppenwolf, whose maiden win came at the expense of the highly-regarded Sacred Way, is a grand-son of the dual Group One winner Maurine.
