The Donna Logan and Chris Gibbs prepared St Jean will head towards the Gr. 1 Barfoot & Thompson Auckland Cup at Ellerslie on March 11 despite a below par performance in the Avondale Cup.
The seven-year-old entire was a good winner of the Gr.3 City Of Auckland Cup on New Year's Day, but was never in contention in the Avondale Cup and finished second-last, nearly 18 lengths from the winner El Soldado.
"You can forget his run in the Avondale Cup," Logan said. "He hated the soft ground. His heart rate was very low after the race so he didn't even try. That shows that he's intelligent or cunning," she added.
