Matamata apprentice Tegan Newman is still coming to terms with her successful start to her riding career.

Newman (21), had her first ride on stable runner Massofdash for her employer, Jim Collett, and she guided the Align mare to a decisive win in the New World Maiden 1400 at Matamata on Saturday.

"It's still kicking in a bit," said Newman. "I could hear the whole crowd screaming as I was getting to the finish. Everyone was so happy for me."

Collett says he has taken his time with Newman and felt Massofdash would be the ideal horse to start with. "She'll probably ride her again next time at Te Rapa," he said.
