Residential left no doubt she is a filly on the rise when she comprehensively downed race favourite Starvoia to record her second stakes victory in the Listed ILT Ascot Park Hotel Southland Guineas (1600) at Invercargill on Saturday.
The Pins filly had narrowly defeated Starvoia in the Listed Dunedin Guineas a fortnight ago with many predicting the tables would be turned on the weekend. Nobody informed Residential of that scenario as she tracked a hot speed before dashing away in the closing stages to win untouched by just on four lengths from her stablemate.
Dezzies Delight battled on gamely for third but the first two were in a class of their own and have co-trainer Karen Parsons excited about what lies ahead for the pair.
"It was such a thrill to see them perform so well and back up their form over the past couple of months," she said.
"They are chalk and cheese in a lot of ways as Residential is a filly who is so laidback and a great doer whereas Starvoia is more the nervous type who we have battled to keep the condition on.
"I've said all along you won't see the best from them until they have another year on them so to do what they are doing now is quite special."
Parsons was quick to praise the ride of stable apprentice Gosen Jogoo who followed instructions to the letter aboard Residential.
"Gos is on fire at present and he did everything perfectly on the filly," she explained.
"I said to him that he would need to be ahead of Starvoia on the home turn like he was at Dunedin so when he lobbed into the trail I had the feeling that he would be hard to run down. There's not a lot between them so once he got that break on Chris (Johnson) and Starvoia it was the winning of the race."
Parsons, who prepares the pair with husband John, advised they would clash again in a fortnight in the Listed NZB Insurance Stakes (1400m) at Wingatui with Starvoia likely to be sporting blinkers for the first time in the event. – NZ Racing Desk
