Jason Waddell has earned an early crack at a Group One classic double.

The Cambridge-based jockey has made the most of his opportunities since launching a comeback with his results exceeding expectations.

Waddell has ridden 11 winners, including a Group Two success, in the month since he returned to the saddle – "It's all coming to hand really well," he said.

HIs black type success came in the Waikato Guineas aboard Wyndspelle, although he has subsequently opted to partner the progressive Camino Rocoso in the G.1 Vodafone New Zealand Derby at Ellerslie on March 4.

Waddell has also been booked for the Gr.1 Wellfield New Zealand Oaks mount aboard the in-form filly Devise.

He was impressed with the staying future of the Shaune Ritchie-trained Devise after riding Zurella's half-sister for the first time at Trentham where they finished runner-up in the Gr.3 Desert Gold Stakes.

"She's running in the Sir Tristram Fillies' Classic on Saturday and she has improved a lot since we finished second in the Desert Gold Stakes," he said.

Waddell will also ride Packing Tycoon in the Gr.1 NRM Sprint at Te Rapa. – NZ Racing Desk.
