Patience was a virtue for Matamata trainer Jamie Richards as he waited until the last hour of the Select session to complete the buying book for the Te Akau Racing juggernaut at Karaka today.

Te Akau Racing kingpin David Ellis took out his 12th leading buyer title at the Premier session of the NZB National Yearling sale earlier in the week when he signed for 26 individuals at a total $4.197m spend. Both he and Richards remained active during the Select sale, adding a further three horses to the tally before Richards completed their 2017 book with a stunning Burgundy filly from the Cambridge Stud draft.

Consigned as Lot 1065, the grey filly features a host of international stakes performers in her extended family including the mighty triple Melbourne Cup winning mare Makybe Diva. Richards admitted she was a filly well worth waiting for as he headed off fellow kiwi trainer Lisa Latta to secure the prize.

"She is just a gorgeous filly, a real racy type," he commented.

"Burgundy has made a flying start with his first crop to the track. We've got a half a dozen two-year-olds by him back at home and they have shown so much natural ability.

"This filly was the one we really wanted today. David had identified her and we had to go a little higher than we'd hoped but that's what you have to do to get these types."

Richards advised that exciting Burgundy filly Nucleonic, who won handsomely on debut, would trial on her home track at Matamata next Tuesday before heading to New Plymouth for the Gr.3 Phoenix Park Two-Year-Old Classic on 18 February. - NZ Racing Desk
