Young kiwi trainer Steven Cole has added to the potential firepower at his burgeoning Byerley Park stable with the purchase of two well fancied colts during the early afternoon session at the NZB National Yearling Sale today.
Cole stepped up to the plate with a bid of $105,000 to secure Lot 759 from the Haunui Farm draft, the Smart Missile colt from well performed racemare Irish Colleen. Just 10 minutes later he was back in action as he went to $140,000 for Lot 764, a Power ex Jayasuriya colt from Tamahere vendor Brighthill Farm.
Cole, who produced Dukedom to win the 2016 Gr. 1 Levin Classic in just his second full year of training, admitted he wasn't sure if he would succeed in securing either colt due to the heavy interest in the pair.
"It was hard work and for awhile I didn't think we would get either of them as the bidding was coming from all around the auditorium," he said.
"We thought they were both quality animals who looked like they would run as two-year-olds so I guess there were quite a few others who thought the same.
"Power has had a cracking start with his first runners here and in the Northern Hemisphere while Smart Missile is producing plenty of winners as well."
Cole advised that breeder Daniel Nakhle would retain an interest in the Smart Missile colt with Cole's father David and uncle Richard taking the remaining shares in both horses. – NZ Racing Desk
