It is a rare day indeed when a Burrumbeet Cup winner can win a city race in the same preparation, but the feat proved simple enough at Caulfield on Thursday for the rampant record-breaker Darren Weir.
In what turned out to be an omen bet of sorts for the first race at Caulfield on Australia Day, the mare Unfurl (NZ) (Raise The Flag) was backed in from $10 to $7 and then produced a huge finish from last to win running away.
Just two starts ago on New Year's Day, Unfurl won the Burrumbeet Cup to earn her connections A$11,000 - which was exactly 25 per cent of what she managed to secure by beating fellow mares at Caulfield 25 days later.
Weir said Unfurl had always shown him some staying talent.
"'She was going to be a pretty smart horse but then she had knee surgery which has held her back a bit so it's great to get another win out of her," Weir said. -racing.com
