Spieth pleases in Warwick Farm trial

The last time punters saw Spieth he was a certainty beaten down the straight at Flemington in the Gr.1 Darley Classic with trainer Bryce Heys already plotting his revenge.

Spieth, a lightly raced graduate of Trelawney Stud, finished third for Jason Collett beaten 1-1/2 lengths in a 797-metre trial at Warwick Farm on Monday – Heys more than pleased with the effort.

"That's all I wanted from him today," Heys said. "He won't have another trial.

"We'll do the rest of the work here, that's the best way for him."

Spieth was a brilliant first-up winner last campaign, taking out the Listed Tatts Lightning at Randwick before being thrown into the deep end in the Gr.1 weight-for-age Darley Classic when beaten a nose by Malaguerra after striking plenty of bother in the run.

"He's been down the straight twice now," Heys said. "He won one and should have won one, so he is proven.

"The Lightning has been a long-range plan and that's what I'm focussed on."

It was the first time Collett had ridden the imposing chestnut.

"He's a good horse and that was a good trial," Collett said.

"It was only a quiet trial and he coasted to the line. I didn't let him go at any stage."

Trelawney are to sell the half-brother to Spieth at the NZB Premier Sale, the colt by ShamExpress will go under the hammer as lot 431.To view his pedigree click here
