Nigel Auret is happy to take the tougher option this week with his in-form mare La Fille En Jeu.
He had the five-year-old in the Rating 85 handicap at Otaki on Thursday, but he has instead opted to head to Awapuni on Saturday for the Gr.2 Kamada Park Manawatu Challenge Stakes.
"We're going to have a crack at black type – she deserves a shot at it," said Auret, who races the mare with his wife Adaire.
La Fille En Jeu is a genuine home product being a daughter of Mettre En Jeu, who stands at the family's Letham Thoroughbreds operation on the outskirts of Wanganui.
"We've always had a high opinion of her, she's got plenty of ability," Auret said.
La Fille En Jeu has won six of her 14 starts, the latest of them at Hawke's Bay in early November before she was denied an opportunity to advance her record at Trentham earlier this month.
"We had a bit of a hiccup there when she pulled a shoe and she had to be late scratched, but she's ready to go again," Auret said.
Despite La Fille En Jeu's absence from Otaki on Thursday, the stable could still make its presence felt at the Levin meeting with Petite En Jeu (NZB Insurance Pearl Series Race) and Laird Of Delgatie (Abba Contracting Maiden).
The former was a last-start fifth after being caught four wide without cover over 1200m at New Plymouth while Laird Of Delgatie finished fourth there in his first start over 1400m.
"They both look like they could end up being quite handy horses," Auret said. – NZ Racing Desk.
