Da Shindig - Race Images South
Da Shindig looms as one of Jan Hay's best winning prospects at Riccarton on Friday.

The sparingly-raced Shinko King seven-year-old has been in solid form and he will face a drop in class in the Dunstan Feeds Championship Qualifier, in which he will be ridden by the visiting central districts jockey Masa Tanaka.

"His agent rang me so I was happy to put him on," Hay said. "The horse is going well, he just needs to be ridden right.

"He has to be able to find his feet and then be given clear air – he can't have an interrupted run."

Da Shindig finished sixth last time out in a competitive Rating 75 event during the New Zealand Cup carnival. He was caught four back on the fence and finished off solidly once he saw daylight late in the straight.

Hay will also be represented by the capable Pepper Mill in the Mike Pero Mortgages Open, but she has reservations about the gelding's winning prospects.

The son of Patapan, who has won five of his 13 starts, was a below-par sixth, but with a genuine reason, at his most recent appearance on the course.

"He pulled up sore behind and the vet couldn't pinpoint anything," Hay said. "He will improve immensely with this run and he needs a bit more distance.

"He'll go to the open 1400 at Ashburton in a fortnight and then on to the Timaru Cup."

Stablemate Queen's Jubilee, who is raced by Sir Peter Vela, is an unlikely runner in the Rangiora New World Maiden.

"She's a bit sore this (Thursday) morning so she probably won't run and she was one I did rate," she said.

Queen's Jubilee was unplaced in her Otaki debut in the autumn and recently won a trial for Hay. – NZ Racing Desk.
