Brendan Hawtin doesn't doubt Animator's ability, but he does question the four-year-old's application.
"He's got a lot of tricks and he's not the easiest horse to follow, although in saying that his three runs this preparation have been really good," he said.
A winner at the Hawke's Bay spring carnival, Animator then ran fifth after a wide trip at Trentham and last time out he came from well back to run eighth at Tauranga.
"He can do silly things and he was slowly away and then ran the quickest last 600 metres of the race," Hawtin said. "He's got the ability, he just needs to put it all together."
