A poor barrier draw for Mackintosh has hardly dampened the enthusiasm trainer Chris Waller has for his attempt at back-to-back Railway Stakes victories in Perth this Saturday.
CrownBet has Mackintosh at $5.50 after he drew barrier 16 while stablemate and last year's winner of the $1 million race, Good Project was kept safe at $15 after drawing barrier seven.
"It makes it hard but it's possible," Waller said on hearing of the barrier draw. "We've got a good local jockey in Damien Oliver on board so there's plenty of local experience and he takes some good form into the race.
"I had a leaning towards Mackintosh before hearing of the barrier draw but then again, Good Project won the race last year and he came from a very wide gate (11 of 14) so luck obviously plays a part."
Before the Perth Group 1 jumps on Saturday evening, Waller will attempt to win Victoria's feature race of the day when mare Lady Le Fay tackles the $300,000 Ballarat Cup.
"She didn't have a lot of luck at Moonee Valley when she got caught on the inside and last start we might have just ridden her a bit too close," the trainer said.
"The extra distance at Ballarat will suit and she's due a change of luck."
Not long after Waller uttered those words, Lady Le Fay came up with barrier 22 of 22 for the 2200-metre Listed race. -racing.com
