Unbeaten mare Quintessentially will make a belated start to her four-year-old season at Dargaville on Friday.

The Steven Ramsay and Julia Ritchie-trained grand-daughter of the champion mare Ethereal returns to racing in the Nauman Insurance Brokers Northland Cup.

"She's been ready to go for a while, but the tracks have been too wet so she's been held up until now," said Garry Cossey, racing manager for Quintessentially's owner and co-breeder Sir Peter Vela.

The daughter of High Chaparral was successful at Te Aroha on debut in March and she was put aside after winning again at Dargaville a month later.

"She's only won two midweek races so we're not getting carried away at this stage. It's a step up for her, but Steven and Julia think she's forward enough to be competitive," Cossey said.

The stable is also hoping for improvement from Stage Diving when he tackles 2000 metes in the Northern Wairoa Stud Breeders' Maiden.

"His trial form has been a lot better than what he has produced on race day so far," Cossey said.

"He's a big, raw sort of horse who had a tough run first-up and he should appreciate the step up to 2000 metres."

Sir Peter will also be represented by the Tony Pike-trained Schiaparelli in the City of Auckland Supporters Group Cup. She successfully resumed at Pukekohe last month.

"She's taken natural improvement from her last start and it looks a winnable race for her, although nothing is ever easy," Cossey said. – NZ Racing Desk.
