Dwyer’s Riccarton plans foiled again

Henry Dwyer is hoping for a case of third time lucky next year as far as the Riccarton carnival goes.

The Caulfield trainer has ditched plans to run Sonntag in the Gr.3 Christchurch Casino New Zealand Cup and Swampland in the Gr.1 gavelhouse.com NZ 1000 Guineas.

"Sonntag wasn't good enough the other day and the filly pulled up sore," Dwyer said. "I tried to get over last year as well and that didn't work out, hopefully we might get there next year."

It hasn't been all gloom though for Dwyer, who on Thursday celebrated his first Melbourne spring carnival winner with the New Zealand-bred Tavi Bay, a daughter of Tavistock.

"That was great and I'll probably send her out for another break now," he said. "I think she will be up to the better mares in the autumn."
