Keely Be's wayward tendencies didn't help her cause during a light three-year-old campaign and the behind the scenes work on her racing manners may reap a major reward when she resumes at Avondale on Wednesday.
The daughter of the in-form stallion Roc de Cambes will return following a break in the NZ Bloodstock Insurance Pearl Series Race.
"She used to get on one rein a bit, but it looks like we've ironed that out," trainer David Greene said.
"We gave her a trial at Ruakaka and plonked her in behind horses and she handled that really well."
Despite her earlier greenness, Keely Be showed encouraging signs during her first preparation and finished in the money in her first three appearances. She was then turned out after an unplaced run at Te Aroha when tried over a mile.
The stable will also be represented by the well-related debutante La Bella Beel in the West Brook Winery 1400. The four-year-old finished fourth in a recent trial.
"She's a Zabeel mare so you never know with them first-up and if she keeps improving then she's going to develop into a really nice horse," Greene said.
La Bella Beel is a half-sister to the Singapore Group One winner Intercept.
The third member of Greene's team at Avondale is Thatsforsure, who will step out in the Racecourse Parade 1600.
"She seems to have been luckless her whole career," he said. "You wonder if she's one of those horses that just finds trouble, but if things go her way then there's no reason why she couldn't win." – NZ Racing Desk.
