Trainers hoping it doesn’t rain on filly’s parade

Apart from being a touch nervous about the weather, the connections of the impressive last-start winner La Diosa are all smiles.

The filly has yet to race, or trial, on anything other than good ground and her trainers are hoping for similar conditions at Ashburton for Saturday's Listed Barneswood Farm Stakes.

"We're very happy with her and the only concern is any rain," said Matt Brown, who prepares La Diosa with his wife Mandy.

"It's been raining here at home and hopefully it will stay away from Ashburton. We're not sure how she would go on a rain-affected track, I expect a lot of the others are the same."

However, even showers won't prevent La Diosa from taking on a hot field of three-year-olds.

"She needs to line up for another run fitness-wise leading in to the Guineas," Brown said. "One more start will keep her right up to the mark.

"Ashburton won't suit her as she gets back a bit in her races and we're hoping she can get a good drag into the race."

La Diosa has won two of her four starts and her latest success in the Listed Canterbury Belle Stakes, at the expense of race rival Starvoia, cut her Guineas odds to $8.

"She has trained in tremendously well since her last run – we just couldn't be any happier with her," Brown said.

While La Diosa also holds a nomination for the Gr.1 Sothys NZ 2000 Guineas on the first day of the Riccarton carnival, she will only run in the fillies' event.

"If they were around the other way and the 1000 Guineas was on the first day then we might have looked at both," Brown said. – NZ Racing Desk.
