Time to benefit Group-winning mare

Capella - Trish Dunell
Capella

Danica Guy is confident that Capella will show her true worth later in the year.

The Matamata trainer had high hopes for the four-year-old at the Hawke's Bay carnival, but she pulled the pin after below par efforts in the Gr.1 Makfi Challenge Stakes and in the Gr.1 Windsor Park Plate.

"She went out for a month after that last race," Guy said. "I couldn't fault her work, it was sensational so it was a bit of a head-scratcher.

"There's absolutely nothing wrong with her and we're not worried, obviously it was just a bit early for her to really come up.

"With the way the weather has been there's no point in having her in work anyway."

The winner of the Gr.2 Eight Carat Classic last season, Capella subsequently went to Sydney where she performed creditably to finish fifth in the Gr.1 Vinery Stud Stakes and seventh in the Gr.1 ATC Oaks.

Her return home was then delayed when she suffered burns due to an overdose of a pre-travel treatment administered by a Randwick veterinarian and Guy believes that incident could have contributed to her spring downfall.

"She may have needed a bit more time off after what happened in Australia," she said.

"This break will do her the world of good and we don't need to be concerned – you'll see a different horse around Christmas time.

"We can make better plans then as the tracks will be more consistent."

Meanwhile, Guy has accepted some of the blame for stablemate Trigger's indifferent last-start performance. He showed little interest at Hastings where he tailed the field home.

"We dropped him back to last from the wide gate and he just switched off," she said. "That was our choice, but it's obviously not the way to ride him.

"It was very much out of character. He's still quite immature, but I think he can be a really nice stayer in time." – NZ Racing Desk.
