Ringo showed he was on target to tidy up unfinished business at Riccarton when he opened a new campaign in outstanding style on Saturday.
The strapping seven-year-old gave six and a half kilos and a beating to the favourite Get That Jive in the Gr.3 Red Badge Spring Open Handicap at Hastings.
"He was only just beaten a nose in the Coupland's last year and it's always been the plan to go back," trainer Mike Breslin said.
"He's a big, heavy horse so we're hoping to get a couple of runs on ground like today and then he can get away with one on top of the ground."
Ringo settled at the tail end of the field before he improved across the top and he was the widest runner into the straight.
Appreciating the give in the going, he lengthened stride strongly to gun down the hot-pot Get That Jive with Antonio Lombardo finishing a brave third from the outside gate.
"I didn't expect to get so far back, but I was happy to be following Get That Jive," rider Hayden Tinsley said.
"I had a lot of confidence in my horse on this track, it was perfect for him and he has come up well."
Ringo, who is at $14 for his second rack at the Gr.2 Coupland's Bakeries Mile on November 9, provided a change of fortune for part-owner Wellfield Lodge, who are also involved in the ownership of Manhattan Street.
He made his Australian debut in Friday night's Gr.2 Stutt Stakes at Moonee Valley, but the Lisa Latta-trained colt was well off his game and tailed the field home. – NZ Racing Desk.
