Promising three-year-old filly Veearma lived up to her unbeaten trial form with a winning debut at Ellerslie on Saturday, with the performance stamping her as a filly going places in a hurry.

Confidently expected to be prominent in her first race day start after winning her only two trials as a two-year old, the Darci Brahma filly gave her army of supporters little cause for concern as she powered to a comprehensive one and a quarter length victory over the 1100 metre journey.

Carrying the colours of her breeder and part owners Sir Patrick and Lady Hogan, the filly is prepared at Byerley Park by the lethal Peter and Dawn Williams and Paul Richards combination, with Williams pleased to see her live up to the private reputation they hold for her.

"We gave her a couple of trials last season and then said to her owners we'd put her aside and wait until she was three," he said.

"She has always been a wee bit light but has shown plenty of ability.

"We'll play it by ear from here. She does have a nomination for the 1000 Guineas but that's a wee way away so we'll just see what happens."

Rider Mark Du Plessis was full of praise for the effort on a track that the filly had struggled to cope with.

"She is a good filly which we knew from her trials where she gave me a good feel," he said.

"She wasn't entirely comfortable on the track so lucky it was race one and she got the best of it for the day.

"She will be better for the experience but I think she has the class and the more she learns the better she will get."

TAB Bookmakers reacted to the win by slashing the filly's Fixed Odds price to $26 for the gavelhouse.com New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1600m) that will be run at Riccarton on the 12th of November. - NZ Racing Desk
