Jacob Lowry is champing at the bit to get back into action following a self-imposed break.

The promising apprentice took time out due to weight issues and he will resume on Friday with one ride at Gore where he will be reunited with the smart mare Coulee in the Abernethy Contracting Handicap.

"I can't wait to get back - I had four weeks away when my weight was getting a bit out of hand and I was going up to the Great Northern with High Forty anyway," Lowry said.

"It got to the point where I was dragging my feet, but it's worked well and I'm feeling a lot better.

"I'm still walking about 60 kilos and that's why I've only taken the one ride, but I'll be working hard and it should come down in the coming weeks, particularly as the weather gets warmer."

Lowry has ridden Coulee in all six of her wins, including the Gr.3 South Island Thoroughbred Breeders' Stakes at the mare's last appearance in April.

"She's come back super and, while she will take plenty of improvement, I'm still expecting a good run from her," he said.

"Her gallops have been up to the mark and last preparation she won first-up over 1200 metres. That was in a Rating 65 so this is a step up, but she's quality and it's not a strong field." – NZ Racing Desk.
