Wingatui mare Dalwhinnie will be out to add another significant staying victory to her family's roll of honour later this year.

"Hopefully we can get her to the New Zealand Cup – her full-sister Spring Cheer won it so she should get the trip okay," trainer Terry Kennedy said.

Dalwhinnie has been freshened since last racing and her path toward the Christchurch Casino-sponsored Group Three event will begin in earnest on her home track on Friday.

The daughter of Bachelor Duke is in good order ahead of the PGG Wrightson Real Estate Balclutha Cup with Kennedy's only concern the rain-affected going.

"She's definitely got the ability to win, but the track might be a bit heavy for her," he said. "She hasn't had a run for a while so she needs to get going."

Dalwhinnie has put together the solid record of five wins and four placings in a career restricted to just 16 appearances.

"She's had a couple of joint issues and she pulled a muscle in behind as a three-year-old, but she's quite a big mare and time has helped her," Kennedy said.

Dalwhinnie will be ridden by Chris Johnson, who will also partner the former northerner Black Iziah in the Dunstan Horsefeeds 1600.

"He's only had the one run for me and he went well at National time at Christchurch in a 1200 metre maiden," Kennedy said.

"He gets up to a mile and Chris wants to stick with him so he's probably one of my better chances." – NZ Racing Desk.
