Alfred Chan has an excellent chance of opening his winning account for his new employer at New Plymouth on Thursday.
The Hong Kong apprentice began his career with Riccarton trainer Mike McCann and rode 11 winners last season before transferring to Allan Sharrock's stable.
"I think he's got a big future, I've seen enough to suggest he's going to be making the grade," Sharrock said.
Chan, 22, has been booked to ride the very much in-form Art Deco, who is expected to go close to claiming major honours in the NZB Insurance Pearl Series Race.
Placed in both of her starts last summer, she showed her versatility when she returned during the winter for consecutive runner-up finishes before breaking her maiden on her home track by a remarkable 16 lengths.
Art Deco has since run second, after an interrupted run, behind the unbeaten McCullum.
"I would like to think that she can give the young bloke his first winner for me," Sharrock said.
He was also a major influence in the rise to prominence of the star apprentice Kei Chiong who, on her return to Hong Kong, dethroned Joao Moreira last season as Hong Kong's most popular jockey.
Meanwhile, the stable also has another strong winning hope in Valentia, who will be ridden by Dylan Turner in the Linwood Park 'Echoes Of Heaven' Maiden.
"I really like her and it's not a strong field," Sharrock said. – NZ Racing Desk.
