Longchamp out until the autumn

Time has been called on Longchamp's preparation with a good spell now ahead of the talented five-year-old.

Opaki trainer Andrew Campbell said the Tavistock gelding didn't come through his game run for fourth in the Gr.1 Makfi Challenge Stakes as well as hoped for.

"He pulled up a bit scratchy so we'll give him a break and look after him. He's had a very good campaign and he's been in work for months, although we spaced his races.

"He'll have a nice rest and we'll get him back for the autumn."

Longchamp won five races last season and completed a hat-trick of victories when he downed a competitive line-up in the Listed Opunake Cup.

Two appearances this term resulted in a fifth placing, after being caught three wide from a wide gate, in the Gr.2 Foxbridge Plate before a close fourth in the Hastings weight-for-age feature.

Meanwhile, offshore hopes for a younger stablemate have been dashed after Dutrow was unplaced when resuming behind Ugo Foscolo on the opening day of the Hawke's Bay carnival.

Campbell was disappointed the gelding wasn't ridden closer to the pace and he had little chance after getting back in a slowly run race.

"We were hoping for a good run and then we were going to put him on a plane to Australia, but we couldn't go after that," he said.

Dutrow, who is raced by Campbell with long-time friend and stable supporter Tommy Heptinstall, is instead likely to head back to Hastings for a 1400 metre assignment on Saturday week.

The three-year-old's only other appearance was at Tauherenikau last season when he ran third behind Karavali, who was subsequently fourth in the Gr.1 Manawatu Sires' Produce Stakes. – NZ Racing Desk.
