A heart fibrillation suffered during Saturday's Gr. 2 Tramway Stakes at Randwick has seen top racemare Gust Of Wind retired from racing.
The five-year-old Darci Brahma mare, who finished 4th in last year's Caulfield Cup behind Mongolian Khan, was having the first run in a new preparation for trainer John Sargent with the Melbourne Cup in November as her main aim. Those plans have now been put aside as she prepares for a visit to her owner, Sir Owen Glenn's stallion Criterion in the next 10 days.
"We knew something was wrong straight after the race and had her checked out immediately," advised Sargent.
"She fibrillated badly so Sir Owen decided to retire her and she will now make a visit to Criterion to commence a breeding career.
"She was already booked to visit Criterion next week with the plan to then race her up until the Melbourne Cup so instead of returning to the stable she will head to the broodmare paddock instead."
Gust Of Wind won three races during her career including the 2015 Gr. 1 Australian Oaks where she inflicted a defeat on super mare Winx who has remained unbeaten since. – NZ Racing Desk
