Brendon Hawtin is bullish about his prospects of providing the former New Zealand Horse of the Year Ocean Park with the perfect opening to his stallion career.
He will present the first race day representative of the Waikato Stud resident on Saturday when Beachwood takes his place in the Vespa standing at Wellfield Lodge Juvenile Plate at Wanganui.
"It's hero or zero time and I'm hoping I'm going to be the hero," Hawtin said. "He's just a natural and he's as tough as nails."
Beachwood, who is part-owned by the now Cranbourne-based trainer Trent Busuttin, showed a glimpse of his talent with a trial success at Te Teko earlier this month.
"He's just gone ahead in leaps and bounds since then and it didn't cross my mind to trial him again," Hawtin said.
A $40,000 Karaka weanling and on-sold earlier this year for $75,000, the colt is a half-brother to the Listed Great Northern Foal Stakes winner Russian Conquest and to Brackenwood, a black type placegetter as a two-year-old.
"Since he came back from the breaker he has had very little pressure put on him and each week he has improved," Hawtin said.
"I wouldn't want to be swapping him for any other runner."
The stable will also be represented at the meeting by Quantum, a strong chance in the Listed H. S. Dyke Wanganui Guineas.
"Everything has gone to plan with him and he's as good as we can get him," said Hawtin, who will also run last-start winner Dynamo in the Take It Easy Tours 1340.
Quantum posted a win and four placings, including a runner-up finish in the Listed Great Northern Foal Stakes, last season before a break.
"I was really happy with his trial at Taupo, basically it was a Group One field and he didn't blow as much as I thought he would," Hawtin said.
"He will run out a strong 1340 metres and I'll be disappointed if he's not in the first three." – NZ Racing Desk.
