Progressive galloper Dolcetto provided the perfect birthday present for part-owner Paddy Kay when he finished powerfully to score an impressive victory over 1200 metres at Hastings on Saturday.

Prepared by Kay's wife Sylvia from their Foxton base, Dolcetto franked the huge impression he created when breaking maidens at his last start as he held off a solid challenge by the well fancied Eleonora to score by a head and take his record to two wins from just three starts to date.

Rider Rosie Myers was full of praise for the gelding's effort

"He's still got a lot to learn but he's won really nicely," she said.

"He was running around a little before the turn but once we straightened up he was very powerful.

"He was up in grade but he had won well at his last start. He's very green but once he puts it all together he is going to be a good type.

"Sylvia always has a nice horse around her so it's no surprise."

For her part Kay admitted she was hoping for a good performance although she wasn't sure about the improved track conditions on the day.

"He won his last race quite easily so I was a little hopeful but he was stepping up in class and the track was quite different to that day," she noted.

"He is a nice horse but he was going up against some good ones today. Paddy is inside celebrating so we might make sure this guy gets some nice carrots tonight as well."

The Per Incanto gelding is from good mare Our Shiraz who numbered the Listed Invercargill Gold Cup (2200m) amongst her six career wins and is a half brother to the Kay's rugged stayer Antonio. – NZ Racing Desk
