Trainer Brendon Hawtin was quick to admit he was feeling the pressure before racing kicked off at New Plymouth on the weekend.
Hawtin recently moved into the Cambridge property formerly occupied by successful couple Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young but had yet to post a winner from his new base. Keen to make his mark from the new surroundings Hawtin was hopeful his progressive galloper Dynamo could break through for him and he got what he wished for, courtesy of some magic from rider Hayden Tinsley.
Despite being a touch slow from the gates Tinsley soon had the rugged five-year-old settled nicely on the fence behind the early speed set by race favorite New York Minute. Things started to look a little tight for the combination as they approached the home turn behind a wall of horses, however Tinsley didn't panic as he eased his mount through a gap one off the fence and forged to the front.
Under a hands and heels ride over the last 100 metres Dynamo repelled a strong challenge from fellow Cambridge galloper Girlsarebackintown to score comfortably by a long neck at the line.
"That was a big relief to say the least," remarked Hawtin after the race.
"I had put plenty of pressure on myself to get things up and running as quickly as possible from the new stable so that win is very welcome."
Hawtin had been confident he had his charge in the right condition to challenge for the victory, his third from his last six starts.
"He has really strengthened up for this campaign and has been very consistent for the most part all the way through," he said.
"We did some tinkering with his gear including putting the visor blinkers on him which seems to have worked the oracle. When he got beaten at Ruakaka back in June he didn't get going until they had gone past him so we changed things up and since then he has won twice.
"It was also a beautiful ride from Hayden as he got him a great position during the run and then didn't panic when it got a little tight in the home straight."
Hawtin was also quick to pay tribute to Busuttin who phoned him directly after the race.
"Trent was on the phone straight after the race to congratulate me which was a really special gesture," he said.
"I think he was just as keen to see me get that first win as I was."
Hawtin is of the belief that Dynamo is still to reach his ultimate potential and will concentrate on placing him through the grades before tackling some of the feature winter events next season. – NZ Racing Desk
