The Peter McKay trained Amarula has returned in fine fettle judging by his on-speed trial victory in a 1000m heat at Taupo restricted to stakes performers.
In the hands of McKay's son Shaun, Amarula found the front and repelled the challenge of Silver Eclipse.
"He blew quite a bit after the trial so he will improve a lot," Peter McKay said.
Amarula won last season's Hawke's Bay Guineas and McKay is keen to return to Hastings with the four-year-old son of Thorn Park.
"I'd like to aim him at the 1400m sprint [Gr.3 Spring Sprint] on the final day of the Hawke's Bay Carnival. He'd hopefully get in nicely at the weights in that race and then we'd look to push him out to a mile after that."
