Otaki trainers Johno Benner and Hollie Wynyard have their eyes on a Group One spring prize for Humidor.

The son of Teofilo looked a serious staying prospect during a light campaign last season and he made a bold start to his current preparation when he got home well for third over 1400 metres at Te Rapa last weekend.

"He was massive and he didn't have a jump-out or a trial before that," Benner said. "He's getting better all the time and he was making ground, which was against the pattern of the day."

The winner of two of his five starts last term including the Gr.3 Manawatu Classic, Humidor will make his next appearance in a Rating 75 mile on Saturday week on the opening day of the Hawke's Bay carnival.

"We're looking at the Livamol Classic with him, but he's got to win his way into it," Benner said.

"He's down the order a bit at the moment, but now he's had a run he's on target and we do think an awful lot of him."

Meanwhile, stablemate Kingsman's three-year-old preparation took on further momentum on Tuesday when he ran away with his 1000 metre trial heat at Foxton by seven lengths.

"Nothing is set in concrete yet for him, but all the Guineas races here are pretty appealing with the 2000 Guineas as his main aim," Benner said. "How we get there, I'm not quite sure just yet."

Kingsman was a winner at two and also placed in the Karaka Million.

The Wolf, who placed in his open 1000 metre heat on Tuesday, will make his four-year-old debut in a 1400 metre sprint at Hastings on August 27.

He has a win and two placings from his five starts and hasn't raced since he finished sixth behind the subsequent Gr.1 Australian Derby winner Tavago in the Gr.3 Wellington Stakes last November. – NZ Racing Desk.
