Lisa Latta will have a number of form runners in action on the closing day of the Grand National carnival and she expected two of her Platinum team to prove particularly hard to beat.

The Awapuni trainer is upbeat about the chances of both Platinum Command and Master Platinum on Saturday after sterling performances from the pair on the first day of the festival.

The Whyte Handicap winner Platinum Command narrowly failed to add the Gr.3 Winter Cup to her record when she was edged out by Miss Three Stars.

"She goes really well on the back-up and hopefully they get a little bit of rain, that will help her even more," Latta said.

Platinum Command looks well-placed in the Millennium Hotels & Resorts Premier Open with 53kg and she is a past winner over the 1400 metre course at Riccarton.

"I've got a good team in and Master Platinum is another one who has come through the first day run particularly well," Latta said.

The four-year-old, whose dam Platinum Zana was a two-time winner on the track, put his Rating 65 rivals away easily by five lengths and, while he goes up a grade in the Giant's Steps at Linwood Park Premier, he drops two and a half kilos.

Other good chances from the Latta team include the first day winner Lincoln Bay (Vernon & Vazey premier) and the last-start runners-up Golden Bay (Brackenfield Hunt Premier) and Rod's Lincoln (Heatstore Premier).

Stable stalwart Our Gazza returned to his best last time out at Hawera, but Latta said he would need plenty more rain to boost his chances of successfully defending his Christchurch Casino Winter Classic title. – NZ Racing Desk.
