Allan Sharrock is rueing his bad luck with stable star Kawi after a leg injury has delayed the triple Group One winner's return to racing.

The Taranaki trainer was confident the Savabeel gelding was on target to make a successful return in Saturday's Gr.2 Lisa Chittick Foxbridge Plate at Te Rapa.

"He banged a cannon bone in work this (Thursday) morning," Sharrock said. "He's come up brilliantly and I thought he was forward enough to win.

"He had gone a 1000 metres on the grass and came home the last 600 easily in 42 before he pulled up slightly sore.

"It just shows there's nothing certain in life, but if it had been a tendon we would have had a real problem."

Sharrock said he would now regroup with Kawi and look to kick off the gelding's spring campaign in the Gr.1 Makfi Challenge Stakes at Hastings on August 27.

"Luckily, I'm a trial and a jump-out ahead of last year," Sharrock said.

Twelve months ago, Kawi overcame a slow start to finish runner-up in the Foxbridge Plate before he was relegated to fifth. He then posted a clear-cut win in the opening leg of the Hawke's Bay Triple Crown series at Hastings. – NZ Racing Desk.
