Ben Ropiha is hoping to replicate the success of a fellow Cambridge trainer.
He has set his promising staying mare Jayla Monet on a programme followed last spring by Tony Pike with his Gr.1 Auckland Cup placegetter Sacred Master.
Pike produced the four-year-old for two wins during the Hawke's Bay carnival, success in a Dunstan Feeds Qualifier and the Gr.2 Avondale Cup before he finished third in the Ellerslie feature.
"I'm going to try and take the same path as Sacred Master did," Ropiha said.
"I went through and had a good look at what he did and I think that will suit my mare as well. Ideally, we would like to look at the Auckland Cup as her long-term grand final."
Jayla Monet is preparing for the Hastings spring meeting after making rapid progress through the grades in the autumn with a hat-trick of victories.
"She had a month out after she won at Auckland and this is her fourth week back," Ropiha said.
"She's come back super and I couldn't be happier with her. She's got a good turn of foot and we'll see if she's going to be as effective on the dry tracks – everything suggests that she will be."
Jayla Monet was recently on the market with a listing on an auction web site attracting Australian interest.
"We got offered $A90,000 for her, but we'll wait until after the Hawke's Bay carnival – she may be worth a lot more after that," Ropiha said.
Jayla Monet has already proved herself a wise investment after Ropiha's brother Logan, who shares in the ownership, purchased the daughter of Any Suggestion for $1000 as a yearling.
"He also had shares in Pondarosa Miss so he's doing alright," Ropiha said. – NZ Racing Desk.
