A horse considered to be a top staying prospect is on a winning role over the shorter trips.

Carnaby is showing his versatility and he will shoot for his third consecutive mile victory when he lines up in the Rangitikei Tyre Centre Ltd Handicap at Awapuni on Saturday.

"His last two wins have been very good and I don't think he'll have too much trouble in the higher grades," trainer Tony Bambry said. "He's been working well and he's bright and happy.

"He'll have a short break after this race and a Rating 75 mile at the Merial meeting in September will be his next start."

The rising four-year-old Carnaby is then likely to be stepped up in distance.

"We'll get him out over ground in the spring," Bambry said. "He won't mind it as the tracks get better and I think he's a 2400 metre horse – his style of racing will suit that distance.

"Early on we thought he was a Derby horse, but it was just too soon for him. He won a 2000 metre maiden at Wanganui so we nominated him for it, but it just didn't fall into place."

Bambry is also expecting strong performances on Saturday from Alcaldesa (Rayner Building 3YO) and first-starter Soiree (Rural Fuel 2YO).

An upset winner of the Listed Wanganui Guineas earlier in the season, Alcaldesa covered extra ground at Otaki last time out before finishing on for second.

"She's obviously pretty close to her best again," Bambry said.

The juvenile Soiree has placed in both his Foxton trials and is expected to give a good account of himself.

"He's a lovely big horse – he's 17 hands now, and while I don't expect him to win, he's good enough to run in the first three," Bambry said. – NZ Racing Desk.
