Lisa Latta got more than she bargained for from Manhattan Street when he went to the races for the first time.
The Awapuni trainer was expecting a good showing at Otaki last month, but she was pleasantly surprised when the two-year-old produced a game performance to beat Sophia Magia who had won her previous start.
"He's a real staying type of colt and I didn't think he would win fresh-up – we would have been happy if he had just finished off the race well," Latta said.
With that experience under his belt and the progress Manhattan Street has subsequently made, she will be disappointed if he doesn't go close again on his home track in Saturday's Rural Fuel Juvenile.
"He's come through the race really well and he should be hard to beat," Latta said.
By Manhattan Rain out of a sister to the multiple Group One-winning Australian sprinter Lankan Rupee, Manhattan Street is likely to head toward the Courtesy Ford Listed Ryder Stakes at the end of the month as long as he performs up to expectations on Saturday.
"We'll probably press on to Otaki – he's won there before and it's a chance to get black type for him," Latta said.
"He might go on to the Wanganui Guineas after that and then we'll give him a break and look for some nice races around Christmas time for him."
Another well-related youngster in Saturday's line-up is the Makfi filly Promising, who is a half-sister to the Australian winner and Group performer Bassett.
