A couple of years ago Rosehill trainer Chris Waller produced a filly called Winx (Street Cry) to win a late-season two-year-old race on her home track.
At last weekend's corresponding Sydney meeting, the Waller trained Rip Van Winkle filly Awoke beat her stablemate Foxplay (Foxwedge) over the same 1400m distance to maintain a perfect 'two from two' record and set up a tilt at stakes racing in the spring.
"They will have a short break but will stay in the stable," Waller said. "We will look at the races early in the Spring in the Princess Series which we did with Winx.
"Awoke will have a little freshen-up then we'll find something better. It's good to take that residual fitness into the spring." Waller said.
With a pedigree that would not be out of place in an Oaks field, Henderson Racing and Cook Bloodstock's 2-year-old Rip Van Winkle filly Awoke is showing surprising precociousness.
A fast-finishing winner over 1159 metres on the Beaumont track when making her career debut on June 11, Awoke raced midfield before launching her winning challenge.
Jockey Brenton Avdulla was confident throughout the run.
"I travelled strongly and was always confident. She's a nice filly and she's going to get further," Avdulla said.
A $125,000 purchase from the Windsor Park draft at the 2015 NZ Bloodstock Premier Yearling sale, Awoke descends from a celebrated Windsor Park family.
Her dam Viviane (Volksraad) is a half-sister to three stakes winners, the grand filly Nimue (Star Way) whose eight wins included the Group 1 New Zealand One Thousand Guineas and Group 1 Levin RC Bayer Classic; Smiling Like (Star Way) the Champion Stayer in NZ in 2000-01following wins in the Group 1 Wellington Cup and Group II NZ Cup; and Eurostar (Star Way) a multiple Group III winner who was runner-up in the Group 1 Brisbane Cup and Group II PJ O'Shea Stakes.
Nimue is the granddam of the 2014 Group III Colin Stephen Stakes winner Deane Martin while another half-sister to Viviane, Ladystaci, is the dam of the shock Group III Kingston Town Stakes winner Greenmailer.
Awoke comes from the second crop of Galileo's triple Group 1 winning son Rip Van Winkle (IRE).
His first crop includes the Group II Eight Carat Classic winner Capella, Group III Western Australia Oaks winner First Impressions, Gr.3 2yo Classic winner Magic Dancer as well as exciting unbeaten galloper Let Me Roar and the highly regarded Sydney and Melbourne winner Euro Angel.
North of the equator, Rip Van Winkle is the sire of Group 1 Phoenix Stakes winner Dick Whittington.
Rip Van Winkle stands at Windsor Park Stud where his 2016 service fee has been set at $12,500 +GST incl. LFG.
